ASTM D624 – Standard Test Method for Tear Strength of Conventional Vulcanized Rubber and Thermoplastic Elastomers

ASTM D624 measures tear strength: the force it takes to propagate a tear through a rubber or thermoplastic elastomer specimen once a nick exists. A standard-shaped specimen, with a precisely placed starting point, is pulled until the tear runs through. The reported number is that force divided by the specimen thickness – a higher number means more resistance to tearing.

Tear strength and tensile strength are different numbers: a compound can pull hard and still tear easily once a nick exists. If your part sees sharp edges, flexing, or abrasion, name the tear test and the target on your RFQ, not just tensile.
