How compression-deflection testing helps compare the stiffness of rubber materials.

What ASTM D575 measures

ASTM D575 covers two procedures for determining the compression-deflection characteristics of rubber compounds. It is useful for comparing how stiff rubber materials are under compression and for developing materials for compressive applications.

Scope and limits

The methods exclude materials usually classified as hard rubber or sponge rubber. A comparison of compression stiffness is not a service-life prediction or a guarantee of finished-part performance.
